People are groggier and think less clearly when woken up during their night-time sleep than during than an afternoon nap, a new study shows.

People who drink too much have increased odds of developing metabolic syndrome, a series of risk factors and conditions that are strongly related to cardiovascular disease, a new study says.
The study, expected to be published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, defines excess drinking as more than two drinks per day for men or one drink a day for women. Binge drinkers are also considered to be at an increased risk. Continue Reading »

A significant percentage of small children going to emergency rooms with an “apparent life-threatening event” had ingested over-the-counter cold and cough medicines, researchers report, despite recent U.S. recommendations that these products not be used in children under 2.
Such medicines can cause apnea (cessation of breathing) in young children, noted Dr. Raymond Pitetti, lead author of a study published in the August issue of Pediatrics and associate medical director of the emergency department at Children’s Hospital, Pittsburgh. Continue Reading »

A simple pill, combined with exercise training, might enhance speed and endurance in athletes.Researchers reporting in the July 31 issue of Cell discovered that young adult mice that exercised and took a drug originally developed to treat metabolic diseases ran considerably farther compared with mice who only exercised. Giving the transplant drug cyclosporine to heart attack patients can prevent the injury that’s caused by blood rushing back to the damaged heart, French researchers report.The trial of cyclosporine involved 58 people whose blocked arteries were reopened after heart attacks. It was spurred by several lines of research, noted study lead author Dr. Michel Ovize, professor of physiology and cardiology at the University of Lyon. Continue Reading »
